Why More R 1300 GS Riders Are Fitting a DENALI B6 Brake Light
Share
The BMW R 1300 GS and GSA already have a decent factory tail light, but plenty of riders want more rearward presence, especially loaded with luggage or filtering through traffic. The DENALI B6 is the obvious way to add that: a small auxiliary brake light that genuinely increases how much of the bike lights up when you're slowing down, without turning into a big wiring project.
What the B6 Actually Does
The B6 is a dual-intensity pod, running light and brake light, built from six high-power LEDs behind a 180° lens, in a low-profile housing that doesn't stick out much beyond the bodywork. Fitted as a second brake light, it adds a separate point of illumination rather than just relying on the factory unit doing all the work, which is what actually increases the rearward footprint riders are after.
On its own, the B6 runs off a simple two-wire brake circuit and works as a straightforward extra brake light. Add a DENALI CANsmart controller, or on the bracket-mounted versions a WeiserCAN or Weiser Wizard module, ezCAN or MotoCAN, and it picks up a proper running-light function, programmable flash patterns and deceleration-activated auto braking.
Why Bother With a Second Brake Light?
A GS loaded with panniers and a top box, or ridden two-up, already sits lower and wider than the bike looks from the front, and the standard light can end up partly obscured. It won't guarantee anyone behind you reacts any faster, but a second, dual-intensity light genuinely adds to what's visible under braking, particularly useful riding in traffic or on unlit roads at night.
Fitting the B6 to an R 1300 GS/GSA
GS Accessories offers the B6 three ways for the R 1300 GS and GSA, and the light itself is identical in all three, it's just a question of where you want it to sit. The Weiser High-Level B6 bracket mounts it up and away from the standard cluster for maximum visibility, the logo-free version gives the same high-level position without the Weiser branding, and the DENALI B6 licence plate brake light keeps it low and close to standard for a more discreet install.
Is the DENALI B6 worth adding to an R 1300 GS? Yes, if you spend time in traffic or ride two-up with luggage. It's a small, straightforward upgrade that adds a genuine second brake light rather than just a brighter version of the one you've already got.
